Rory McIlroy has been encouraged to retire from golf just a week after winning the Masters, completing his Career Slam of all four major championships. Shane Lowry, a close friend and fellow Irish golfer, shared a private conversation with McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, revealing that McIlroy had always said he would retire a "happy man" if he ever triumphed at Augusta.
McIlroy won a thrilling playoff against Justin Rose, securing his long-awaited fifth major title. After celebrating the victory with Stoll and their daughter, Poppy, Lowry took the opportunity to tell Stoll that her husband could now retire, having achieved everything he set out to accomplish in his career.
“This means everything to him. It’s all he thinks about,” Lowry told the Golf Channel. “He always said to me he would retire a happy man if he won the green jacket. So I told Erica, ‘He can retire now.’”
Lowry emphasized the significance of McIlroy’s victory, noting the challenges McIlroy had faced over the years. "He’s had a long ten years, 11 years," Lowry said. "He’s had a lot of hurdles, a lot of moments to get back up from. It’s a credit to him. It’s a sign for the rest of us that no matter how bad you feel, you just need to keep going and working hard, and your day will come."
Though McIlroy’s win makes him only the sixth golfer in history to complete a Career Slam, he has no intention of retiring immediately. McIlroy, who has long been one of golf’s biggest stars, hinted that he might step away from the sport before turning 50, but he remains determined to continue competing and has been backed by many pundits to add more majors to his already impressive resume.
