After Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope, who belongs to his native Chicago, the biggest question of rounds is — who is he a fan of — Chicago Cubs or Chicago White Sox? We will find out in the article.
Who is the Pope a big fan of?
Soon after the Pope was announced, Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV’s brother, John Prevost, had spoken to a local Chicago news station WGN TV, where he revealed which team has the Pope always supported.
He claimed that he has always been a fan of Chicago White Sox, while there have been many rumours surrounding the idea that he has been a fan of Chicago Cubs.
Speaking to the local TV, John said:
“He was never ever a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where that came from, He was always a Sox fan. Our mother was a Cubs fan. I don’t know, maybe that clued in there and our dad was a Cardinals fan, so I don’t know where all that came from.“Further, John said:
“And all the Aunts, our mom’s family was from the north side, so that’s why they were Cubs fans.”Chicago’s Cubs and White Sox’s claims on social media
What happened was very interesting to note because the Chicago Cubs first claimed the new Pope Leo XIV as a Cubs fan, when they shared a post on X, with a message outside Wrigley Field stating:
“Hey Chicago. He’s a Cubs fan!”
But soon after, the Chicago White Sox corrected them with a video showing the Pope actually supports the Sox. They shared a clip of his interview and a scoreboard at Rate Field saying, “Hey Chicago. He’s a Sox fan!”
The Cubs then admitted it in a follow-up post.
With the new Pope’s election, it has also got Knicks fans excited because he went to Villanova University, just like Knicks players Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. Some fans joked that this could be a lucky sign for the Knicks this year. The whole moment became a fun sports story for Chicago and New York fans.
