Ilia Topuria, in a recent interview, revealed the plans for his next bout. The news came as a relief for fans who haven’t seen him in action for the longest period of time, since his last win against Max Holloway at UFC 308. The fighter defended the featherweight title in his last bout and soon vacated the title to move up to the lightweight division.
Ever since the fighter was not seen in the Octagon, the recent claim made by him, regarding his
bout at IFW has now been confirmed by the UFC boss,
Dana White, at the UFC 315 pre-fight conference.
The results of the UFC 315 main card title bout to determine the opponent for Ilia Topuria’s next bout in the Octagon
Despite repeated callouts by Ilia Topuria, Islam Makhachev, the current lightweight champion, did not issue any response and instead expressed his desire to move up to the welterweight division. This sent in a massive shockwave across the divisions of the promotion due to the current ranking of the fighters.
Makhachev expressed his desire to be a two-weight champion. However, much to the fighters' unfavorable circumstances, the welterweight division is being reigned by Belal Muhammad, a long-term training partner of the Dagestani fighter under the tutelage of Khabib Nurmagomedov. Both the fighters have dissed the idea of facing each other within the Octagon.
Despite all these, fans had started speculating that the upcoming UFC 315 card will play a major role in deciding the opponents of the fighters who are moving up the weight categories. The upcoming event will witness a title bout between the current welterweight champion Muhammad and contender Jack Della Maddalena.
True to the fan theories, Ilia Topuria in a recent interview with El Hormiguero, revealed that the winner of the title bout at UFC 315 would determine the next opponent for the El Matador. According to the fighter, if Muhammad retains the title, it would be Makhachev that Topuria would be facing next and if Jack wins the bout, it would be Charles Oliveira, the next top contender within the lightweight division, who would be facing the former featherweight champion at the International Fight Week.
The accountability of the fighter’s statement has been affirmed by the UFC CEO Dana White at the pre-fight press conference for UFC 315. Upon being asked by one of the reporters on the legitimacy of the words by Topuria, White replied, “Yeah there’s a lot of moving parts rights now and yeah that’s pretty accurate.”
