MUMBAI: Newly-appointed ICC chairman Jay Shah arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday. The former BCCI secretary, besides witnessing the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is likely to attend a meeting of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics Organising Committee.
Shah had played an important role in cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and it's understood that he will push for the sport's continuity in the Brisbane Olympic programme.
In August 2021, the ICC had announced the establishment of a working group to pursue cricket for the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics, including representatives from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), USA Cricket, and Zimbabwe Cricket. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had decided that cricket will be a part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at the 141st IOC Session held here over a year ago.
After Shah started his tenure last week with a visit to the ICC headquarters in Dubai, in his first address as the ICC chairman, he highlighted cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Summer Games as a significant opportunity for the sport's expansion. He expressed confidence that the Olympics would offer cricket a platform to attract new fans, making it more inclusive and accessible across regions.
