The Kansas City Chiefs move toward the
Super Bowl with the hope of winning. However, the road to victory is not going to be easy. Patrick Mahomes, the key player for the Chiefs' offense, taking on one of the strongest defensive units in the league. Meanwhile, head coach Andy Reid also recognizes how dangerous Philadelphia Eagles' defense really is. Adding to Kansas City's woes are injuries to some offensive players that throw more doubts on whether the team can pull it off on the biggest stage of all.
Will Mahomes be able to overcome this challenge, or will the defense of Eagles with their injury problems be too hard to handle?
Eagles Defense: Mahomes' Biggest Challenge Yet
The Eagles' defense has turned out to be a relentless adventure even through the course of the season to terrorize these quarterbacks. Coordinated by Vic Fangio, they've been near-invincible against the unpredictable passing and rushing attacks mounted against them. The disruption of plays and turnover potential are their big differentiators; they lead in the league for EPA added by their defensive play per. Andy Reid acknowledges that they are one of the better defenses he has faced in a long time. He is well aware of the problems associated with playing against them.
"Oh, man, that guy, I can’t get rid of that guy. He’s everywhere; he’s tough," Reid said of Fangio. "He knows what is coming at him. And the Chiefs' offense knows what is coming at them."
Linebacker Zack Baun and safety Reed Blankenship have been making plays all season with key tackles and turnovers. Baun is third in solo tackles and second in forced fumbles in the entire league. If there is any defense capable of slowing Mahomes down, it's this one.
Just to add to the Eagles' defense, the Kansas City side is also weighed down with some important players suffering from crucial injuries. Running back Kareem Hunt, who played one of the more convincing roles in the Chiefs' AFC Championship conquest, is now having trouble with a quadriceps injury. He has been practicing, but one cannot tell for sure if he will be at game time 100 percent.
What makes things worse is that Hardman is out for the season due to a knee injury. That is a significant loss for Mahomes, who relies on Hardman's speed and ability to create separation.
The one good thing? Mahomes himself is healthy. He has practiced fully and will take the lead when it counts.
This Super Bowl is looking like a real clash of willpower. The Chiefs will need to find a way to contend through an Air Force-generating Eagles defense and their status in injury hell in order to obtain another crown. Will Mahomes put up another heroic effort, or shall the Eagles show a little forearm? We shall see.
