Once again, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner had a fine display, writing their names into the record books of the Toronto Maple Leafs during a dominant 6-2 victory against the Calgary Flames. Both players earned franchise records in what had been a total domination of the game by the Maple Leafs. With their star players performing magnificently and blending with great chemistry, Toronto continues its pursuit of a top berth in the Atlantic Division.

Auston Matthews & Mitch Marner Lead Toronto Maple Leafs to Victory

In the offensive fireworks of Toronto, Mitch Marner played an important part, with two assists, thereby surpassing Borje Salming for the most career multi-assist games in franchise history. The 26-year-old now has 132 games of doing that, a clear badge of his elite playmaking. Marner's consistency as a setup man lately has been one of the primary reasons the Maple Leafs have had consistent offensive success, year in and year out. In setting yet another franchise record, this assist on William Nylander's power-play goal was also Marner's fourth season with at least 60 assists.

Auston Matthews, on the other hand, was up to his old tricks, scoring twice on the power play in the second. It marked the 36th multi-goal period of his career, which broke the previous record shared by Darryl Sittler. While Matthews is known to have one of the most lethal shots in the game, he once again demonstrated that he is capable of turning the game around in an instant hallmark of the NHL's elite goal scorers.

But, aside from Matthews and Marner, the depth players of the Maple Leafs contributed as well. William Nylander produced one goal and two assists, Max Domi tallied a goal and an assist while Bobby McMann scored in the third period. The power play for Toronto was at its best; they scored on three separate occasions.

Defensively, Joseph Woll put up a solid effort, saving 24 shots and only allowing 2 goals. His composure in the net allowed Toronto to keep its stranglehold on the game. All-around good Maple Leafs' defensive structure and offensive flair combined to toy with the Flames from start to finish.

The victory in Toronto also had some serious playoff implications, putting them within two points of the Florida Panthers for the Atlantic Division lead. When the playoffs get underway, the Maple Leafs need to rely not just on their star players but also on key contributions from supporting cast members if they want to extend their playoff run.
