Since the separation with star forward JT Miller in January, the Vancouver Canucks have been wrestling with an inconsistent offense. It has become a perennial bother for the club, with a number of contributing factors attributed to the firepower failings. Among Canucks insiders, Dan Murphy weighs in on the problem, shedding light on some of the things that Miller's absence raises and the urgent need for more players.
The Two Players Right Now Are Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson Who Suffer from JT Miller's Absence
With JT Miller's departure in favor of the New York Rangers, the Vancouver Canucks continue to be an inconsistent offensive outfit. Over the last 18 games, they have generally scored three goals or fewer. This is clearly more than a blip on the radar and shows the presence of deep underlying issues. Sure, chances are being made, but the team has failed time and again to convert these chances into goals.
Brock Boeser has fallen under the spotlight. It is like without Miller, he struggles for rhythm. His production values have plummeted, and mentally, he probably hasn't been quite right since the trade deadline. There are indications from Elias Pettersson that he is getting back into form, but there is still no consistent scorer the team can rely upon in crunch time.
Another alarming thing? As of now, no forward in the Canucks organization sits on pace for 60 points this season. When you compare that to the offensive performance last year, the drop-off has made even clearer what Miller's absence created: a huge void. From injuries to shooting woes and perhaps just internal challenges, scoring for Vancouver has become all but impossible.
In filling that gap, forward Filip Chytil, the new acquisition, seemed to be a decent bet but might not be a good fit in the top six. He's more of a third-line center, which means the Canucks still need more high-impact forwards to bolster their offense. Meanwhile, Quinn Hughes continues to be the main engine driving offense: the issue is that leaning on him to create chances is becoming unsustainable.
Filip Chytil undergoes injury that weighs down Vancouver Canucks further damage
Vancouver's offensive depth was further weakened after Filip Chytil suffered concussion symptoms due to a hit by Chicago Blackhawks forward Jason Dickinson. Chytil has a history of concussions. He could not get up after the hit and had to be assisted off the ice. The uncertainty surrounding his recovery now leaves the Canucks without a key center at this critical juncture in the season.
.
In the statement of head coach Rick Tocchet, Chytil feels good, but he is still under concussion protocol. There will be an assessment within the next 48 hours to determine if he will be able to feature in the six-game road trip that the squad has to endure. At this point, Chytil's absence just adds to the challenge for Vancouver in overcoming offensive struggles.
