Rockstar is rumored to set a price tag of $100 (nearly Rs 9,000) for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 game, potentially setting a precedent for other companies to raise their game prices. According to video game analyst Matthew Ball of Epyllion, this potential price increase is driven by rising inflation and development costs.

In his "State of Video Gaming in 2025" report, Ball highlights the potential impact of GTA 6, which is expected to be the biggest video game release of the year.

The report suggests that the industry is hoping GTA 6's pricing strategy will pave the way for higher game prices across the board.

Rockstar’s history of raising game prices

In 2020, GTA publisher Take-Two was among the first to increase game prices from $60 to $70, citing the transition to next-generation consoles as justification. While it’s expected that GTA 6 will include a $100 version as part of a lineup of special editions, the standard edition is anticipated to be priced at $70.

Gaming budgets have skyrocketed in recent years, driven by growing expectations for the amount of content a game should offer. Despite this, video game prices have remained relatively stable, aside from the last $10 increase.

To address rising costs, game developers have started introducing incentives that require minimal additional investment but still generate revenue. For instance, many major titles now include an early access period of a few days for players willing to purchase the most expensive edition.

Rockstar may not delay GTA 6's 2025 release date

Despite rumours of a potential delay of GTA 6, Rockstar Games' HR team has been actively recruiting via LinkedIn. This suggests that the game is still on track for a fall 2025 release.
