Google Messages is soon get to get the WhatsApp-like Delete for Everyone feature. As reported by Android Authority, Google Messages is working on a highly anticipated feature that will allow users to delete Rich Communication Services (RCS) chats for everyone in a conversation.
Key details of the upcoming Google Messages feature
- Remote deletion: Users will have the option to delete messages not only from their own devices but also from recipients' devices. Deleted messages will be replaced with a "Message deleted" placeholder.
- Time limit: The feature will come with a 15-minute window for message deletion. After this period, users will only be able to delete messages locally on their own devices.
- Compatibility: The feature relies on updates to the RCS Universal Profile, meaning it will only work on devices running the latest version of Google Messages. Older versions may not support remote deletion, and recipients using outdated software may still see deleted messages.
The feature was discovered during an APK teardown of the Google Messages beta app, indicating that it is still in development. While the exact release date remains unclear, the progress suggests that the feature could roll out in the near future.
RCS, often referred to as the next generation of SMS, has brought features like read receipts, typing indicators, and improved media sharing to Android users.
