When faced with an employee's observation that "ChatGPT is becoming synonymous to AI the same way Google is to search," CEO Sundar Pichai deferred to DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis during a recent company-wide 2025 strategy meeting.

Hassabis promised significant developments, stating that "the products themselves are going to evolve massively over the next year or two." He outlined his vision for a universal assistant that "can seamlessly operate over any domain, any modality or any device," as reported by CNBC. The company's Project Astra, an experimental universal assistant announced in May, is scheduled for updates in the first half of 2025.

"I expect some back and forth" in 2025, Pichai noted while presenting a chart showing Gemini 1.5 leading ahead of GPT and other competitors. "I think we'll be state of the art."

The Google chief acknowledged the company's later entry into the generative AI race but remained optimistic. "In history, you don't always need to be first but you have to execute well and really be the best in class as a product," he said. "I think that's what 2025 is all about."

Addressing pricing concerns, Hassabis confirmed there were no plans to match competitors' $200 monthly subscription rates, maintaining that Google's $20 monthly Gemini advanced subscription provides good value.
