Waqf Act: Why govt agreed to put key provisions on hold

With SC saying it was inclined to stay parts of Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 – including those allowing appointment of non-Muslims on Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards and arbitrary denotification of ‘Waqf by user’ properties – the government decided to take a momentary step back and return with a detailed response to objections raised by a clutch of petitioners

Two important provisions of the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 won’t be implemented for the time being, the Central government told the Supreme Court on Thursday, April 17.
The provisions that won’t be implemented include formation of the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards and the provision on de-notifying properties already declared or registered as waqf.
