The Supreme Court of India drafts tough guidelines for the kind of demolitions UP is now famous for. Now, any official responsible for contravening these conditions will not only pay from his own pocket to rebuild the structure but will also be liable to pay damages.
The Supreme Court has taken the wheels off “bulldozer justice", which had, in the past couple of years, become a leitmotif of several BJP-led governments.
Invented by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and embraced enthusiastically by his counterparts from Madhya Pradesh to Assam, “bulldozer justice” mainly involved demolition of an accused’s house or any other property within hours of commission of an offence, giving him little or no notice to be able to approach a court.
