On March 7, 1987, the legendary Indian opener achieved what no batsman had done before. Decades later, the achievement continues to be celebrated.
When he came out to bat in the first inning of the third Test, the crowd at the Ahmedabad stadium already knew how many runs he needed to get to the record. There’s no mention of it having influenced his batting in that inning though.
When he got to his half-century, the crowd at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel stadium was buzzing. Soon after, Sunil Gavaskar seemed to decide to oblige the crowd and tried to hit a six. The lofted shot would fall short of the mark but it would still roll over the boundary.
