is one of the most unique festivals celebrated in India. Since, most Hindu festivals follow the position of the moon and are based on the lunar calendar. Thus, the dates of festivals change every year. But Makar Sankranti is a festival which falls on the same day every year as it follows the solar calendar.


Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival, falls on the equinox when day and night are believed to be equally long. It officially marks the beginning of spring or the onset of Indian summer and the days become longer, and nights shorter.

The festival has different names in different parts of the country, such as , , Uttaryan, and Khichdi.

Having 'Til-gul' i.e. sesame and jaggery in the form of sweets like laddoos is a custom of this festival.

Kite flying is an activity highly associated with Makar Sankranti.
Apart from India, this day is too celebrated in Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.
