Veteran actress Mumtaz thinks her in-laws would not have accepted her if she had been 'bold on screen'

Veteran actress Mumtaz often draws parallels between the Hindi cinema that was during her heydays and the Bollywood that is today. Recently, she said that films were not made on bold subjects back then and, in case, she had done bold scenes on screen, her in-laws may not have accepted her into the family. Speaking to a leading daily, she said and we quote: 'I never did bold stuff. Like, I never kissed on screen. Aaj kal to pata nahi kya kya karte hain (Nowadays, almost every limit has been crossed). Ab jo log ye bold kaam kar rahen hain, woh kar rahen hain. Main nahi kar sakti (Those who are comfortable doing it, are doing it. I can't do it). I am quite orthodox. I don’t think the Madhvanis would have accepted me marrying Mayur if I had been bold on screen.' The actress, however, did wear a bikini in one of her films. Those days, not many actresses dared to show some skin on-screen due to many reasons. Mumtaz said she wasn't too comfortable with the idea of wearing a bikini because she didn't like her thighs. She said that she only ended up doing so after actor Feroz Khan had a talk with her and comforted her. She said, 'I was also good at cycling and horse-riding. I rode a horse in one film. I also wore a swimming costume in Roop Tera Mastana - but I wore a bikini in only Feroz Khan's Apradh. I had a complex of my typical heavy Iranian thighs and I thought a bikini was too open, but Feroz promised: 'Mumzy, I will delete the scene if you disapprove of it'. And when I saw the scene, I felt that I was looking very sexy and nice. But today, everything has changed so much.' The actress even confessed to getting cosmetic surgery. She said, 'I am 74 today, so my mini-lift is not a big deal in today’s times when people are doing so many cosmetic changes raste pe chalte chalte.' Mumtaz ruled the Hindi cinema around the 60s and 70s with films like 'Khilona', 'Tere Mere Sapne', 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', 'Apna Desh', and 'Loafer', to name a few.
