“Uniform import duty for all countries,” says Piyush Goyal: Apple Imports Duty Slash

Amid the controversy regarding the elimination of customs duty on American apple imports, Union Minister Piyush Goyal clarified on September 12 that the Central government had not relaxed any import duty. Instead, they removed an additional import duty previously imposed on the United States. Goyal emphasized that a consistent import duty now applies to all nations.Goyal stated, "When the Congress has lost public trust, they resort to confusing the public... There has been no reduction in import duty. We removed an additional import duty known as retaliatory duty imposed on America... To support domestic apple production, the Modi government imposed significant import duties on imported apples... Some months ago, we also established a minimum import price for apples... In response to US restrictions on India, which reduced our exports, we imposed retaliatory tariffs on apples. It was a tough measure we took... Now, there is a uniform import duty for all countries."The opposition strongly criticized PM Narendra Modi and the Central government for slashing the customs duty on American apple imports by 20%. Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti stated that PM Modi had presented a gift to the US President, which was "paid for by the suffering and sacrifices of Kashmiris." Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi questioned whether the government aimed to support Indian apple growers or those in the US.
