In the two-part finale of Marvel’s a 'Agatha All Along', showrunner Jac Schaeffer chose a path that left Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, at the heart of the story, without reintroducing Wanda Maximoff. Schaeffer explained that the decision was about honoring Agatha’s story and her journey, which involved becoming a “ghost” guide to Billy Maximoff, rather than including a big cameo for Wanda. Schaeffer noted that the show’s goal was to delve into Agatha’s complex character and relationships, especially her connection to Billy.
The finale, directed by Gandja Monteiro, follows Agatha, Jennifer Kale (played by Sasheer Zamata), and Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) as they travel along the Witches’ Road, a supernatural path that turns out to be a creation of Billy’s imagination. Inspired by an old tale, “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” Billy unknowingly conjures this mystical realm. Agatha’s connection to the road goes back to 1756, when her son, Nicky Scratch, first created the song. That same year, Nicky lost his life to Agatha’s former lover, Death (Aubrey Plaza). In the finale, when Death demands Billy’s life, Agatha sacrifices herself to save him, transforming into “Ghost Agatha.”
Schaeffer shared that the writing team had planned from the start for Agatha’s journey to end with her transformation into a ghost, becoming Billy’s spirit guide. The decision to sacrifice Agatha instead of giving her a traditional “happy ending” was intentional. Schaeffer said that while they initially considered a more upbeat conclusion, it felt less genuine. She believed the story of Agatha was best told with a bittersweet, meaningful end, especially given the show’s themes surrounding death.
