If you relish getting chilled to the bones, then keep an evening of this upcoming long weekend free to watch Smile, the horror mystery thriller that began streaming just yesterday on OTT and has already climbed to the platform’s number 5 slot. The film was nominated for the Best Horror Movie at the 2023 Critics Choice Super Awards.
The storyline revolves around a psychiatrist played by Sosie Bacon who becomes increasingly paranoid about being threatened by an uncanny entity after she watches a traumatic incident to one of her patients.
Here’s a top-of-the-line tweet from Parched Productions who declares Smile as the “scariest movie in a looong time”…. and adds that Sosie Bacon killed it.
For horror movie buffs, this is great stuff. As another user tweeted earlier today: “Just watched the Smile movie, good luck to me falling asleep.”
Several watchers were, however, disappointed with the ending and had several suggestions on what it should have been on various review platforms. Critics, however, loved it and it has notched up an 80 per cent score on Rottentomatoes.
Film Inquiry’s Stephanie Archer declares that “Smile proves itself to be its own beast of a horror”, while Australia’s Herald Sun published a review that describes the film as “A bone-rattling, brain-flipping chiller sure to be ranked highly by true fans of the genre”.
There has also been much praise for writer-director Parker Finn. Scott Tobias of The Reveal noted that the director uses “the strength of his conceit to turn the screws, raising tension through the Ring-like timeline Rose (the protagonist) faces and the sheer relentlessness of her supernatural tormentor”.
Another critic found that his palms were sweating by the end of the film. We'd say, go ahead and take a chance with Smile, but make sure you don’t watch it alone.
