On a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, a controversial sit-down between former President
Donald Trump and Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, featuring a memorable cameo by Mike Myers as
Elon Musk was addressed. The episode was the show's return from its 50th anniversary special and did not hesitate to touch on the current tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine.
The chilly open started as James Austin Johnson played Trump alongside Bowen Yang in the role of Vice President JD Vance, playing a make-believe Oval Office meeting with Zelenskyy, portrayed by Mikey Day. Things quickly got comical as Trump and Vance insulted Zelenskyy over not showing adequate appreciation for US assistance against Russia's aggression. Vance jokingly bemoaned that Zelenskyy did not compliment their looks, while Trump mocked Zelenskyy's informal outfit and compared him to a "trash collector" for dressing in a T-shirt and jeans at the White House.
Just as the showdown appeared to culminate, Mike Myers emerged in a chainsaw-wielding Elon Musk. In a strange and comedic turn, Musk spastically moved the chainsaw on Trump's head, awkwardly jumping around the room. Jokingly, he asked if Trump knew that he was now the "president now," leaving the audience in hysterics.
Musk's persona then turned attention to his part in assisting Trump in identifying and trimming government inefficiency. In a satirical twist on Musk's contentious management style, he proposed firing unnecessary employees, such as air traffic controllers. Trump replied with a tongue-in-cheek comment regarding the efficiency of planes landing upside down, having bags fall straight into people's laps.
Mike Myers' appearance not only added to the comedic value of the sketch but also marked his first SNL appearance in 10 years.
