The recently released teaser for 'Squid Game' season 2 provides a possible explanation for one of the story's biggest questions: why Seong Gi-hun, the protagonist, would be allowed to re-enter the deadly games. The second season of this intense Netflix series is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, and fans eagerly await the continuation of Gi-hun’s journey to bring down the brutal operation.
At the end of season 1, Gi-hun, deeply traumatized by his experience, had decided to leave for the U.S. to be with his daughter and enjoy his newfound wealth. However, on his way to the airport, he witnessed the Squid Game Salesman recruiting a man, stirring up unresolved emotions about the horrific games. Instead of boarding his flight, he called the Squid Game number on a business card and pledged to stop the games for good. Viewers were puzzled, though, about how Gi-hun could re-enter the games after making his intentions clear, as it seemed unlikely the organizers would let someone with such a goal compete.
Initially, fans speculated that Gi-hun would disguise himself as a guard to sabotage the games from within, but the teaser images show him joining as a player once more. This raised more questions, as Gi-hun doesn’t need money—he’s motivated solely by a desire to save others. However, the teaser suggests a reason for the Front Man’s confidence in allowing him to return. Gi-hun is shown desperately warning the other players, urging them to recognize that the games aren't worth the cost, but the other players ignore him. They are too driven by their own needs and desires for wealth to heed his words. No one is willing to leave, as they see the games as their only shot at a better life. The Front Man, aware of the desperation that drives contestants, may see Gi-hun’s influence as ultimately ineffective.
