The controversy unfolded during the filming of his latest K-Drama venture, ‘Welcome To Samdal-ri', where on February 10, observant online users uploaded posts across various platforms, shedding light on a behind-the-scenes moment captured during rehearsal.
In the shared footage, the cast of the show can be seen rehearsing a scene within the confines of a room.While Ji Chang Wook's back obscured his identity from the camera's view, keen-eyed viewers purportedly observed him taking a puff from what appeared to be an electronic cigarette. The clip, extracted from an official behind-the-scenes video posted by JTBC, initially went unnoticed by many until the original poster brought attention to the alleged incident. Though the act of smoking is a personal choice typically reserved for adults, South Korea reportedly enforces stringent health regulations concerning indoor smoking.
Several social media users weighed in on the controversy, expressing a range of emotions and opinions. One user lamented, "I agree. At this point, I can’t help but wonder what the entertainment industry is all about…" Another expressed disbelief, stating, "Wow, is this for real? Soon after the incident hit headlines, the actor's agency Spring Company, released an official statement saying, "We apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable due to the behavior of actor Ji Chang Wook revealed in the drama behind content released on January 26. In the making of content, there was a scene where actor Ji Chang Wook used an electronic cigarette indoors. It caused discomfort to those who considered it an inappropriate scene. Actor Ji Chang Wook is aware that his actions were inappropriate and deeply regrets disappointing many people. We sincerely apologize once again to those who have seen the content, the staff on the scene, the actors, and the viewers who loved the work."
The agency further stated, "We will pay special attention to ensure that such inappropriate behavior does not reoccur. Once again, we sincerely apologize for causing concern to many people through this incident."
