At least 4 were killed and 17 others were injured in a devastating collision that occurred on Interstate 96 in southeast Michigan when a semi truck collided with multiple vehicles, as reported by state police. The incident occurred on Saturday night.
The accident took place near Webberville, where traffic had been halted due to ongoing utility work on power lines. At approximately 11:45 pm, a westbound semi truck with a trailer collided with the stationary vehicles.
Michigan State Police said on X, "It appears the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and could not stop his vehicle in time."
The collision resulted in the semi truck and several vehicles catching fire, with more than a dozen vehicles involved in the incident.
Officials confirmed that seventeen individuals, including the truck driver, were transported to local hospitals for treatment, whilst four people lost their lives.
The state police identified the deceased as a 29-year-old Carson City resident driving a Ford pickup and three family members from Lansing in a Chevy Trax - a 20-year-old female, a 43-year-old female, and a 47-year-old male. The exact familial relationships were not disclosed.
On Sunday, authorities continued their clean-up operations and announced that the affected section of I-96 would remain closed indefinitely.
