Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, a rare form of bone marrow cancer, according to multiple US media reports on Monday. This diagnosis comes just a month after he was indicted on new sex crime charges.
Weinstein, 72, is currently receiving treatment at Rikers Island prison. His health has been a growing concern, particularly following a recent court appearance in September where he appeared pale and visibly frail.
Chronic myeloid leukaemia, as detailed by the Mayo Clinic, affects the bone marrow and can lead to a range of health complications. Weinstein's diagnosis follows a series of serious health issues, including hospitalization earlier this year for testing positive for Covid-19 and being diagnosed with double pneumonia.
Last month, he underwent emergency heart surgery to address a severe buildup of fluid around his lungs and heart, after which his representative assured him that he was "out of danger at the moment."
Weinstein's health struggles come amid ongoing legal battles with Manhattan prosecutors. Efforts are underway to merge his original 2020 sexual crimes case with recent indictments, allowing the prosecution to consolidate these charges for a joint trial.
Earlier this year, Weinstein’s New York conviction was overturned while he was serving a 23-year sentence, with the New York Court of Appeals finding that improper rulings had prejudiced his case. However, he remains incarcerated, serving a 16-year sentence for rape following a 2022 conviction in Los Angeles. His legal team is actively appealing that verdict as well.
Despite the numerous allegations against him, Weinstein has consistently denied all charges of assault or rape, which have had a profound impact on both the film industry and the broader cultural landscape.
