Indian-origin student from Andhra Pradesh killed in US hit-and-run, days before graduation
NEW DELHI: An Indian-origin student from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, who was pursuing her master's degree in the US, died in a hit-and-run incident in Denton City, Texas, her family said on Friday.
The victim, identified as V Deepthi, was walking home with her friend Snigdha near the 2300 block of Carril Al Lago Drive on April 12 when they were hit by a speeding vehicle. Her friend Snigdha was also from Guntur district.
Having suffered severe head injuries, Deepthi, who was set to graduate this May, passed away on April 15. While, Snigdha is currently undergoing surgery and her condition is stable, according to the family members.
According to news agency PTI, her father, Hanumantha Rao said, "I spoke to her occasionally, and as she was in a hurry to attend classes, she told us she would call on Sunday when she would be free. That turned out to be the last call."
The body will be transported from the US on Saturday and is expected to arrive in Hyderabad by Monday morning, after completing necessary formalities.
The family had sold their agricultural land to fund her education and had intended to attend her graduation ceremony next month.
Deepthi was pursuing her MS at the University of North Texas and had completed her B Tech from Narasaraopet Engineering College.
Deepthi's last conversation with her mother was on Thursday.
