PATNA: An 18-year-old youth was allegedly shot dead in a case of mistaken identity near a govt school in Magadahi locality under Town police station area of Samastipur district on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Ayush Yadav, son of Ashok Rai, a resident of Jitwarpur Bullechak in the district.
According to maternal uncle of the deceased, Vijay Yadav, his family had an old land dispute with their neighbours. Ayush borrowed his shirt to wear and went to the market with his friend on a bike. However, his neighbours, who are involved in the land dispute with his family, mistook Ayush for Vijay and shot him dead.
"An FIR has been registered on the complaint of the deceased's father. Ayush was living at his maternal grandparents' home in the town for his studies. Ayush was riding the bike, while his friend was sitting on the back seat. He had worn his uncle, Vijay Rai's shirt that led to his murder. Two accused, Sajan Kumar and Mukesh Kumar, have been arrested in the case," said Sanjay Pandey, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the town.
Police said Ayush was riding his bike towards Madhuri Chowk to bring home groceries when he was followed by two armed assailants on a bike. They shot him near the Kendriya Vidyalaya and fled the spot. Local residents rushed him to the sadar hospital in an injured state, where doctors declared him dead. He was shot in the chest.
On being informed about the incident, Town police arrived at the spot and began their investigation. "Ayush's maternal grandparents' family had an ongoing dispute with their neighbour, Sajan, over one bigha of land. Both families are claiming ownership of the land. They had scuffles before in the matter as well. The matter is pending in the Samastipur civil court," Pandey said.
The ASP further added that Ayush was living with his grandparents for the last two years, and his father, Ashok, is a painter. "Other named accused from Sajan's family are absconding. Raids are being carried out to nab them," he added.
