Tragic news is coming from Kolkata, where, reportedly, a film and television director, identified as Siddhant Das, under the influence of alcohol, sped and rammed his car in a crowded market on Sunday. Reports state that one person lost his life in the accident while eight others were left seriously injured.
The car accident happened in the bustling Thakurpukur area at approximately 9 am on Sunday. Das, allegedly, was traveling from Bakrahat to Gariahat when he lost control of his vehicle. His vehicle crashed into hawkers and pedestrians who were busy with their grocery and vegetable shopping. The car eventually stopped after hitting a parked scooter.
“The accident occurred around 9:30 AM when the vehicle lost control in the overcrowded Thakurpukur Bazar on Bakrahat Road, knocking down nine pedestrians," the official told news agency PTI.
Following the accident, locals alerted the police and pulled Das from his vehicle, beating him until the authorities arrived and took him into custody. Reports suggest that four bottles of alcohol were found in his car.
Further, Das, 35, was accompanied by two women; one was arrested, while the other, who was in the backseat, managed to escape the scene.
“The vehicle has been seized and will be sent for examination. The driver has been arrested and will be produced in court on Monday," the official said.
Further, the victim of the accident who passed away was a 63-year-old vegetable vendor. He was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, but unfortunately, he didn’t survive. Another local, identified as 68-year-old Joydeb Majumdar, also sustained grave injuries and is reportedly battling for his life. Seven others were given first-aid and their wounds were tended to before they were discharged the same day. Several carts and two-wheelers were also damaged due to the incident.
