Manoj Bajpayee signed ‘Satya’ for just Re 1, reveals Hansal Mehta

'Satya' (1998) is widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most powerful portrayals of the underworld. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma and featuring a game-changing performance by Manoj Bajpayee as Bhiku Mhatre, the film redefined the gangster genre with its raw realism and powerful storytelling. However, what’s making headlines now is not just the film’s brilliance but the humble sum Bajpayee was paid to sign the film.
Re 1 signing amount for a stellar role
In a candid revelation to Pinkvilla, filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared that Manoj Bajpayee signed 'Satya' for a symbolic sum of just Re 1. “Manoj ko maine Rs 1 signing diya tha us film ke liye, bohot sharaab pee ke usko diya tha,” Mehta said, adding that the same token amount was given to Anurag Kashyap, while Saurabh Shukla, who eventually co-wrote the film, received nothing at the time. This revelation adds another layer to the film’s cult status, born not out of big money but sheer passion for cinema.
Duo reunites for horror comedy
While the pay might have been minuscule, 'Satya' turned out to be monumental for everyone involved. Bajpayee’s portrayal of Bhiku Mhatre became iconic, launching him into the spotlight as one of the most talented actors of his generation. The film also marked a turning point for Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Kashyap, and Saurabh Shukla, helping carve a new path for gritty, realistic storytelling in Bollywood.
Now, decades later, the iconic actor-director duo is teaming up once again, this time for a horror-comedy titled 'Police Station Mein Bhoot.' Taking to social media, RGV announced, “After 'Satya', 'Kaun' and 'Shool', I am thrilled to announce me and @BajpayeeManoj are once again teaming up for a HORROR COMEDY, a genre which neither of us has explored.” The announcement has sent fans into a frenzy, hoping that the magic of their past collaborations will return in this unique blend of scares and laughs.
