April 3 — Trump's 'Liberation Day', Waqf bill, IPL: KKR vs SRH

• Trump hits India with 'discounted' 26% tariffs
"India, very, very tough," he said as he finally announced his 'Liberation Day' tariffs: "They charge us 52% ... We charge them almost nothing." Indian neighbours Bangladesh (37%), Sri Lanka (44%), Myanmar (44%) and Pakistan (29%) have been hit with even higher rates. China faces 34%, Taiwan 32%, and the EU 20%. But some of the stiffest tariffs have been imposed on southeast Asia: Vietnam with 46%, Thailand 36%, Laos 48%, and Cambodia 49%. Trump's 25% tariff on foreign car imports, announced earlier, also kicks in today.
• Waqf amendment bill likely to be tabled in Rajya Sabha
The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday night after about 12 hours of debate, and is expected to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Both NDA and opposition parties have issued whips for their MPs to turn up. The bill seeks to change how waqf properties, donated by Muslims for charitable or religious purposes, are managed.
• PM Modi in Thailand
It’s a two-day visit, during which he will hold bilateral talks on regional cooperation with Thailand PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Thursday, and attend the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit on Friday. It’s the 6th BIMSTEC summit since 1997, when it was established.
• Calcutta HC to hear VHP’s plea on Ram Navami procession
The court will hear the plea after VHP was denied permission for a Ram Navami procession in Saltora, Bankura, due to overlapping events cited by the police. A parallel hearing will also address restrictions on similar processions.
• IPL 2025: KKR vs SRH at Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and last season's finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) find themselves in troubled waters, having lost two of their last three games, and both teams will be desperate to revive their campaigns when they face off.
