Pahalgam Terror Attack
At least 26 tourists were killed and many others wounded on Tuesday when terrorists opened fire in a scenic meadow near the resort town of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the deadliest attack since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. The Resistance Front, a proxy group backed by Pakistan’s ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the assault.
The attack came amid US Vice President JD Vance’s four-day visit to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Saudi Arabia to strengthen bilateral ties with the influential Islamic nation.
The timing was also notable as it followed a provocative speech by General Asim Munir, the head of Pakistan’s army, which is considered a major support base for the terrorists involved.

Following the Pahalgam massacre and heightened border tensions with Pakistan, BJP MLAs Rajiv Jasrotia and Satish Bhagat visited villages in their respective J&K constituencies to reassure residents. Jasrotia emphasized the nation's unity and the government's commitment to their safety, while Bhagat affirmed the army's readiness to counter enemy threats.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor rejected Pakistan's call for a probe into the Pahalgam terror attack, emphasizing Pakistan cannot investigate its own alleged crimes. He acknowledged security lapses but urged focusing on the larger picture, drawing parallels with Israel's intelligence failure on October 7. Tharoor also expressed concern over the human cost of strained India-Pakistan relations due to cross-border terrorism.

This incident represents the deadliest attack on tourists in Kashmir since the rise of militancy in the 1990s, bringing back memories of the 2000 Chittisinghpora massacre in Anantnag, where 36 members of the Sikh community were killed just days before US President Bill Clinton’s visit to India.
In response to the attack, India took decisive action, suspending all visas for Pakistani nationals and ordering them to leave the country by April 27. However, medical visas will remain valid for an additional two days, expiring on April 29.
"In line with the decisions made by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Government of India has decided to suspend visa services for Pakistani nationals with immediate effect," said the ministry of external affairs. The ministry also advised Indian citizens in Pakistan to return home at the earliest.
India has also taken a series of diplomatic actions against Pakistan for its role in supporting cross-border terrorism, including blocking airspace for Pakistani airlines and shutting the Wagah border.
