The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a big move to retain one of their best players in the long run. The team has signed second baseman Ketel Marte to a new deal that will keep him in Arizona for several more years. The contract comes after his impressive outings in recent years. But for how long, and what are the terms of the contract?
Ketel Marte signs six-year $116.5 million contract with Diamondsback
Reports by the Arizona Republic indicate that Ketel Marte signed a six-year contract extension with the Arizona Diamondbacks for $116.5 million. Under this new contract, he will now remain with the team until the 2031 season. It also comes with an additional $64 million in pay and allows him to extend his contract for one more year in 2032.
Earlier, in March 2022, Ketel Marte signed an extension that would run through 2027 with a club option for 2028. This new contract, however, supplants that deal, guaranteeing his presence in Arizona for much longer.
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the signing at a press conference in Phoenix, Arizona. A team spokesperson said,
“Ketel Marte has been a key player for us, and we are excited to have him as part of our future.”Ketel Marte becomes Corbin Carroll and Corbin Burnes' fellow core players from Arizona
Ketel Marte has been one of the most dependable players on the Arizona Diamondbacks in recent years. He batted 136 in 12 games in 2024, 292, with an on-base percentage of 372 and a slugging percentage of 560. On top of this, he even added 36 home runs and stole seven. With these, he became an All-Star player for the second time in his life. He was also third in the National League Most Valuable Player voting behind Francisco Lindor and Shohei Ohtani.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are now doing the same with their top players. Apart from Ketel Marte, the team has also retained other top players such as outfielder Corbin Carroll and starter Corbin Burnes, who are signed through at least 2030.
The team has also signed shortstop Geraldo Perdomo to a four-year, $45 million extension and reliever Justin Martinez to a five-year, $18 million extension. Having captured the National League pennant in 2023 and posted 89 wins a year later, the Arizona Diamondbacks are determined to be a competitive team. This latest signing shows their determination to solidify for the future.
