How referees treated Michael Jordan compared to other players has been a serious debate among NBA analysts and Fans. Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast with Ryen Russillo, Bill Simmons recalled how officials seemed to be in awe of Jordan, treating him with a level of reverence rarely seen in sports. In his candid remark, The Ringer founder gave a hilarious analogy referencing the walk of music icon Beyonce.

Bill Simmons did not hold anything back while discussing the treatment of the NBA legend, Michael Jordan by the referees in the league. The podcaster and sportswriter shared that Jordan had the luxury to enjoy the special treatment from the referees.
“The way the refs were just in his pocket. And I’m not talking about him getting calls, I’m talking about, like, they’re in the dead spots when people are shooting free-throws before the game. These guys treated him like, you know, it was like Beyonce walking on stage,” Simmons remarked.

Simmons added, “He had every call he wanted. If he was upset at a call, he could say whatever he wanted. If he was yelling at a ref, the ref was like, kind of bummed out. It’s like, ‘Michael Jordan doesn’t like how I’m reffing today?’ And you could actually see them, they’d just kind of lose it.”
Darrell Garretson, the NBA’s former supervisor of officials, openly admitted in 2017 that referees had to be lenient with Jordan for a simple reason— the fans.
“If there’s a play where Jordan and Paxson are together and there’s a foul and Jordan smacked the guy on the arm, I’m giving the foul to Paxson because the fans don’t want to see Jordan foul out of the game,” Garretson stated.
One of the best examples came from legendary broadcaster Mike Breen. During an episode of The Old Man and the Three podcast, Breen recalled a game at Madison Square Garden where Jordan lost the ball out of bounds. Convinced he had been fouled, Jordan unleashed a profanity-laced tirade at referee Eddie Rush. Rush, however, didn’t react and let the game continue. Minutes later, Knicks guard Chris Childs argued a call with much less intensity— and was immediately hit with a technical foul.

Certainly, Jordan has been one of the most influential athletes in the history of sports. In the NBA, he wrote his name as one of the elite stars while fans argue that Jordan is the greatest of all time. Another faction of fans is cheering for Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James in the GOAT debate but Jordan’s monumental influence will forever shine with golden words in the sports history book.
