Donovan Mitchell takes most of the blame for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ devastating defeat against the Phoenix Suns
Make no mistake, despite four consecutive losses Cleveland Cavaliers are still on the top of the Eastern Conference standings with 56 wins and 14 defeats so far. However, their recent fall in the winning streak has been a huge concern just ahead of the playoffs. Donovan Mitchell who has been a standout star for the team has recently made an NSFW comment to his name which sparks discussion among fans.
Mitchell is shouldering the blame for the Cavaliers' struggles after a rough shooting stretch. The 28-year-old guard had a brutal night against the Phoenix Suns. Mitchell had a tough night in the Cavaliers’ 123-112 loss on Friday, shooting just 2-of-18 (11.1%) from the field and missing all eight of his three-point attempts.
He finished with seven points, going 3-of-4 (75%) from the free-throw line. In 30 minutes and 43 seconds of play, he also contributed four rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two turnovers while posting a minus-9 rating.
"I’m gonna put this on me," Mitchell told Cleveland.com. "When your leader ain’t doing sh*t, this is what happens. If I’m not being who I need to be, then we not gonna get to where we want to get to. I will be better.”,” he added taking the blame on himself with the NSFW word.
"You can point to all these different things like KD had whatever, fuck all that, it’s on me…. like I said, there’s really nowhere else to look. I’ll be better. I’ll figure it the f*ck out for everybody. It’s just one of those moments. This builds character. As much as this sucks, I’d rather have this happen today. I work too damn hard to just give in to this but just gotta keep pushing, keep plugging. I’ll be better. I have no doubt but until I am, here we are," he added.
During the Cavaliers’ ongoing losing streak, Mitchell has struggled to a concerning level, shooting just 29.6% (24-for-81) from the field and a dismal 16.2% (6-for-37) from beyond the arc.
Darius Garland led the Cavs with 18 points, five rebounds and six assists. De'Andre Hunter followed with 17 points while Evan Mobley and Ty Jerome added 16 each. Several players including Luke Travers, Emoni Bates, Nae'Qwan Tomlin and Jaylon Tyson were sidelined in the game.
As for the Suns, Kevin Durant was on his A-game propelling his team to a stunning win as he added a game highlight 42 points alongside 6 rebounds and 8 assists.
Suns are still far too down the line. Currently, they are in the 10th position in the Western Conference standings with 34 wins and 37 losses.
Oklahoma City Thunder are leading the league-high 58 wins this season recording only 12 defeats.
