“Nice! A young Taylor”: Travis Kelce reflects on Taylor Swift’s 2009 SNL hosting debut with Jason Sudeikis

Taylor Swift's 2009 SNL hosting debut is remembered fondly by Jason Sudeikis, revealing an unaired sketch collaboration. Despite the cut, her memorable roles in hit skits and a witty monologue song showcased her charm. Swift has since returned as a musical guest multiple times.

Long before Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were one of pop culture's biggest couples, Swift was making a splash as a 19-year-old host of Saturday Night Live in 2009. Now, well over a decade later, Kelce is reminiscing about the experience during an interview with Jason Sudeikis on his New Heights podcast.

Jason Sudeikis shares a forgotten Taylor Swift SNL moment

On the most recent installment of New Heights, Jason Sudeikis, who was a cast member and writer for SNL then, looked back on his best-loved sketches. He let it be known that Swift was set to be included in a sketch titled Potato Chip, one he co-wrote with Will Forte.
“We did a sketch called ‘Potato Chip,’” Sudeikis told Kelce and his co-host, Jason Kelce. “The very first time we did [it] was with Taylor when she hosted. But it didn’t make it.”

Kelce responded enthusiastically, saying, “Nice! A young Taylor too.” Although the Potato Chip sketch didn’t make it into Swift’s episode, it eventually aired in 2013 when Blake Lively hosted.
Though the unused sketch never materialized, Swift still turned her SNL appearance into a highlight reel in the show's history. She appeared in a number of hit skits, such as Roomies with Andy Samberg, Penelope with Kristen Wiig, and Scared Straight, which included Sudeikis, Kenan Thompson, and Bill Hader.
One of the most discussed moments from Swift's SNL premiere was her own-penned Monologue Song, in which she playfully tackled her dating life and Kanye West's infamous VMAs outburst. The song featured her characteristic wit and charm, and thus became a highlight of the episode.

Although Swift has not returned to host since 2009, she has made appearances on SNL several times as a musical guest. She appeared unexpectedly in 2023 to introduce Ice Spice, and Kelce, who had previously hosted SNL that year, also appeared in a sketch that satirized the NFL's reporting on their relationship.
Even prior to their romance, Kelce apparently was already acquainted with Swift's initial career highlights, showing that their worlds were meant to meet.
