Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Highlights: Manika Batra becomes first ever Indian paddler to reach last 16 in Games history

Ukrainian fencing great Olga Kharlan won the sabre individual bronze on Monday to secure her country's first medal of the Paris Olympics. The 33-year-old produced an extraordinary comeback from 11-5 down to beat South Korean opponent Choi Se-bin 15-14.

In the Tokyo Olympics, Manika had become the first women's table tennis player from India to make it to the round of 32 in singles. She did one step better than that on Monday. Achanta Sharath Kamal had also reached the round of 32 in men's singles in the Tokyo Olympics.

World record holder Thomas Ceccon of Italy won the men's 100 metres backstroke gold at the Paris Olympics on Monday. China's Xu Jiayu took silver, with 2016 gold medallist Ryan Murphy taking bronze.

Romania's David Popovici beat Britain's Matt Richards by 0.02 of a second to win the men's 200 metres freestyle gold at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

Luke Hobson of the United States took the bronze. Popovici won in a time of one minute 44.72 seconds after being behind until the final 50.

Reigning Olympic champion Tom Dean failed to qualify for the event after finishing third at the British trials in April behind Richards and Duncan Scott.

Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh blew away the field to win the gold medal in the women's 400 metres individual medley (IM) at the Paris Olympics on Monday, securing her second medal of the meet.

World record holder McIntosh touched the wall in four minutes 27.71 seconds, ahead of American silver medallist Katie Grimes and her bronze-winning US teammate Emma Weyant.

McIntosh's triumph comes two days after taking silver behind Australian powerhouse Ariarne Titmus in the 400m freestyle on the meet's opening Saturday.

Having dominated the gruelling four-stroke event, McIntosh will target more medals in the 200m IM and the 200m butterfly.

Japan won the team gold medal in men's artistic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics on Monday. China took the silver, while the United States won the bronze.

North Korea has secured its first Olympic medal in eight years after the nation's enigmatic mixed doubles team defeated Hong Kong, advancing to the finals for a showdown with the formidable China.

China's Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha also made it to the final after a tough match against the third-seeded Korean team of Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin.

Canada appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday over the decision to dock them six points in the on-going women's Paris Olympic football over a spying scandal.

The Swiss-based CAS said that Canada Soccer and the Canadian Olympic Committee had filed an appeal against the punishment handed down by football's world governing body FIFA at the weekend.

CAS, sport's highest court, said a hearing was "likely to take place" on Tuesday with a verdict expected Wednesday.

Reigning Olympic champions Canada were docked six points and fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($226,000) by FIFA after a staff member used a drone to spy on a rival team's training session last week.

Analyst Joey Lombardi was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence and sent home by the team after being caught flying the drone over a New Zealand training session ahead of the game between the sides, which Canada won 2-1.

Coach Bev Priestman and assistant coach Jasime Mander were banned by FIFA from all football-related activities for one year, along with Lombardi.

The appeal to CAS does not relate to those bans, only to the points deduction.

Hidayat Heydarov of Azerbaijan won the gold medal in the men's under 73kg judo at the Paris Olympics on Monday. Joan-Benjamin Gaba of France took the silver, while Adil Osmanov of Moldova and Soichi Hashimoto of Japan earlier won bronze medals.

Novak Djokovic said he hoped he would get more chances to play Rafael Nadal after beating his old rival in the second round of the Olympics on Monday.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion won 10 of the first 11 games and threatened to inflict the most lopsided defeat on Nadal in the 60th meeting between the pair, before eventually winning 6-1, 6-4.

Nadal said after the loss that he would decide on his future in the sport after the Olympics, where he is also playing in the doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.

But Djokovic, who played Nadal for the first time when they were still teenagers at the 2006 French Open, told reporters he would like to keep the rivalry going.

"There's no other rivalry in the history of tennis that's had 60 matches between the two players. So I think that itself makes it very, very unique and very special," said Djokovic.

"I just hope for the sake of our rivalry and the sport in general that we'll get to face each other once or maybe a few times, on different surfaces, in different parts of the world, because I feel like it can only benefit the sport.

"I don't know how he feels in his body, what his plans are, but let's hope we can play some more."

Djokovic said only time would tell if Monday's match would turn out to be the last time he played Nadal.

"We don't know that. It really depends on many different factors," he said.

"I mean, it depends on whether both of us will keep going or whether we're going to participate in the same tournaments or not.

"I think we both want to play in the Grand Slams and the biggest tournaments. I don't know. We'll probably be very selective."

Japan's Yuto Horigome landed the highest-scoring trick of the men's street skateboarding competition in Monday's final round to retain his Olympic crown.

He edged out American Jagger Eaton by 0.1 points, with another US skateboarder, Nyjah Huston, taking bronze.
