Described by many political observers as the new "Arjun Singh", Digvijaya Singh represents left-of-the-centre politics in the Congress. Currently, Digvijaya Singh is a general secretary of the Congress and is working with Rahul Gandhi for the revival of the party in Uttar Pradesh. Scion of a royal family in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh successfully contested on Congress ticket and became an MLA for the first time in 1977. Next, he served as a minister in the Arjun Singh government during 1980-84. Singh became the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in 1993.

In 1998, he got re-elected for his second term as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. After his defeat in the 2003 assembly elections, Digvijaya promised not to contest elections for 10 years and moved to Delhi. Since then, he has spearheaded the Congress campaign for many state elections with mixed results. In recent times, Digvijaya Singh has been more in the news for his stand against the right-wing Hindu groups. He has accused groups like the RSS and the Bajarang Dal of being involved in terror activities against Muslims, describing it as "saffron terror". Digvijaya's remarks that then ATS chief Hemant Karkare's death during the 2008 Mumbai attacks was linked to Karkare's investigations of Hindu groups gave rise to many conspiracy theories and was described as "crass political opportunism" by American officials, which was revealed in leaked US cables by WikiLeakes.
