AHMEDABAD: A woman thrashed her second husband black and blue and ensured his arrest after discovering he had been allegedly raping her eldest daughter over a period of four years, starting when the girl was just 10 years old.
The woman, whose earlier husband died, had remarried in the hope of providing her daughters with a stable family life, an official from the Abhayam 181 rescue helpline for women said.
Despite threats of eviction from their home, the mother, who works to make ends meet for her family, stood firm in her decision to file a police complaint. "She told us that if she ignored this, her other daughters could be his next targets," said an Abhayam official.
But before that, infuriated at her husband for his shameful act, she thrashed him as people watched.
The horrific abuse came to light through the victim's younger sister. When the woman sought details, the daughter narrated multiple incidents and nature of abuse, leaving her shocked. The woman immediately confronted the man and beat him up for his actions.
The case is particularly tragic as the woman, a widow, had remarried hoping to provide her daughters with a stable family life, complete with a provider and father figure, according to officials from the Abhayam 181 rescue helpline for women.
The accused would allegedly target the victim when her mother was away at work. "He would come home early and rape the girl, threatening dire consequences for her mother and sisters if she spoke up," revealed a counsellor working on the case. The accused maintained control through domestic violence, regularly beating the mother to instil fear in all three girls.
"He even told the victim he would prevent her from ever getting married and keep her with him," the counsellor added.
Following the mother's complaint, a case has been registered against the man at Narol police station under the
Pocso Act. Police were called to the scene and arrested the man shortly after.
