AHMEDABAD: Eight years ago, Noorjahan Kachot miraculously escaped the jaws of death after in-laws poured kerosene on her and her husband ignited a matchstick and set her ablaze. Her clothes on fire, Noorjahan owes her life to neighbours who came rushing hearing her heart-wrenching screams and saved her from being burnt alive.
Shaken to the core, this mother of a young daughter stood firm in her quest for justice.
She narrated her torturous ordeal before Ahmedabad district court which convicted her husband Irfan Kachot and handed him a three-year jail term in February 2013. A month later, he was released on bail by the high court following his appeal against his conviction.
Upon his release, Irfan struck peace with Noorjahan and the couple started living amicably with each other. They also became parents to another child.
Six years passed. Early in May when the appeal against conviction came up for hearing in Gujarat high court, Noorjahan jumped to save her husband from going to jail again. Noorjahan implored the HC to spare Irfan and not disrupt her family life which is going on smoothly and happily ever since the incident happened.
The good wife filed an affidavit and told the court that after the conviction, the man started behaving properly and they were living together happily. “We also had a second daughter after this incident. If the husband goes to jail, the entire family will suffer,” Noorjahan pleaded before the court. After hearing her, Justice A G Uraizee ordered earlier this month that Irfan was not required to undergo remaining sentence and modified his sentence “in the interest of justice”.
