Bhopal/Jabalpur: A special court in Jabalpur sentenced a couple to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case. Three other co-accused in the case were sentenced to two-and-a-half years of rigorous imprisonment each. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 23 lakh 90 thousand on the couple and Rs 1,000 on the rest of the accused.
Prosecuting agency in the case, CBI, told the court that the premises of the inspector posted in the sub-regional office of EPFO Mahendra Kumar Gupta and his wife Usha Gupta. Assets to the tune of Rs 24 lakh 46 thousand disproportionate to their income between 2001 and 2011 was unearthed in the raid.
The CBI also included Balram Patkar, Arvind Singh Rajput and Devi Prasad as co-accused in the case and they were charge-sheeted in the special court designated to hear cases under Prevention of Corruption Act in Jabalpur.
Based on evidence and witnesses produced by the prosecution, special judge Rupesh Kumar Gupta held the couple guilty under section 193 and 201 of the IPC and sentenced them to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment each.
