CHENNAI: The Madras high court has granted interim bail to racer
Vikas Anand, who rammed a Porche car on eight autorickshaws in the early hours of September 19 killing one driver and injuring six others, to enable him to write his law examinations from October 7 to 18.
Directing him to surrender on October 21, the judge said: “The submissions made by the petitioner's counsel and the prosecution reveal that he is a law college student at School of Excellence,
Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University , and he is studying second year BBA-LLB and his examinations are scheduled to be held on October 7, 2016.
Taking into consideration the fact that the petitioner is a law college student and his examinations are scheduled to be held between October 7 and18 and also considering his future, I am inclined to grant him interim bail from October 7 to 20.“
The judge directed him to ex ecute a personal bail bond for Rs 10,000 with two sureties each for like sum to the satisfaction of XVIII metropolitan magistrate at Saidapet, and to surrender before the same magistrate on October 21 at 10.30 am.
Vikas Anand and his friend T Chandrakumar were in the Porche car that rammed parked autorickshaws at high speed killing 29-year-old autorickshaw driver Arumugam. More than half a dozen drivers who were sleeping near their vehicles suffered injuries. Many autorickshaws got smashed. The prosecution, while opposing bail in the principal sessions court here, pegged the monetary loss at Rs 20 lakh.
The duo was slapped with offences punishable under Sections 304 (ii) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 109 (abetment), and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the IPC.
