According to police, Mahendran and his friend Kishore were heading home from college on a motorcycle on Monday evening when a group of seven students on three motorbikes rashly overtook him. They were students of a private engineering college at Malumichampatti.
Mahendran intervened and questioned them for riding in a rash and negligent manner. After a brief tiff with the students, Mahendran reached home safely.
Around 11pm, he came to a hotel at Othakkalmandapam for dinner. As it was raining, Mahendran sought shelter under a flyover after finishing his dinner.
Incidentally, the students who confronted Mahendran in the evening sought shelter under the flyover. Here too they picked up a fight with Mahendran.
During the scuffle, one of the students assaulted Mahendran on his head with an empty beer bottle. The student also chopped off Mahendran's two fingers on the right hand and one finger on the left hand using a knife before fleeing the spot along with other students.

Passers-by took Mahendran to a private hospital at Singanallur and informed police.
The Chettipalayam police arrested A Mariya Dinesh, 19, of Muthaiahpuram in Thoothukudi district, for chopping the fingers of Mahendran.
Mariya Dinesh is a third year BTech student. Two special teams were formed to arrest the remaining six students involved in the attack.
Mahendran was later shifted to Ganga Hospital in the city, where his three severed fingers were replanted.
