PANAJI: Time has come to show the door to doctors who are not ready to upgrade their knowledge and adapt to the latest technology, health minister Vishwajit Rane said on Saturday.
These doctors will be terminated, and new doctors will be brought into GMC to work in the interest of saving lives in the state, Rane said. He was speaking at the inauguration of a medical camp at Mapusa.
He said he wants to set up a new, upgraded cardiothoracic unit at GMC and added that “outdated?doctors would be “terminated? a matter which would be decided in 15 to 20 days.
Rane announced intensive camps for senior citizens all over Goa to help those who face difficulties accessing health services. He said senior citizens are often dependent on their children, who have to take leave from work to escort them to a doctor.
He said cancer is being made a notifiable disease by the state to enable anyone getting their blood tested to have a check on cancer markers by default. He added that the first floor of the new full-fledged cancer institute at Bambolim has been constructed, with six more floors to be built. People will no longer have to go to Mumbai to access cancer treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital, he said.
He added that cardiology and neurology services and the ICU at the South Goa district hospital would be enhanced. Govt is adding more 108 ambulances as well as cardiac ambulances to its fleet, he said, adding that a special dashboard will be set up in Panaji to oversee the services.
GMC will shortly start skull-based surgery, which will be done endoscopically without having to cut open the skull, he said.
