Important to invest in grassroots football: Salgaocar
Salgaocar’s focus on grassroots has been evident for a long time
Panaji: Salgaocar FC were counted among the top teams in the country, winning the national football league title multiple times. They are also the first Goan side to win the Federation Cup at a time when it was the most important club tournament in India.
Since 2016, though, Salgaocar are no longer competing in national competitions, and in 2023, exited from the Goa Professional League, after playing in the top tier of Goan football since 1957. The club’s focus is now only on grassroots.
Salgaocar celebrated a milestone for the club early this week as they held a felicitation ceremony to honour its under-13 team, recently crowned champions of the Goa Football Association U-13 League for the 2024-25 season. The club said the triumph underscored Salgaocar’s enduring commitment to nurturing grassroots football and building a sustainable pathway for young footballers in the state and beyond.
“This triumph is not just a title, it is a testament to the discipline, perseverance and spirit of unity exhibited by each member of the team,” said Shivanand Salgaocar, chairman and managing director of the V. M. Salgaocar Group. “We are immensely proud of what these young boys have achieved. Their journey is a shining example of what commitment and teamwork can accomplish."
During his address, Salgaocar also highlighted the importance of investing in grassroots football and reiterated the club’s philosophy of building talent from the ground up. “Salgaocar FC, with its rich legacy in Indian football, continues to focus on youth development as a cornerstone of its long-term vision,” he said.
Vice president Swati Salgaocar emphasised the role of community, mentorship, and opportunities in shaping young athletes. “Each child here represents the future of Goan and Indian football. At Salgaocar FC, we strive to provide not just training but a holistic environment where young players can grow in confidence, character, and capability,” she said.
Also in attendance were Sanjiv Nagvekar, CEO of Salgaocar FC, and Amith Gaude, secretary of the club.
Following their league victory, Salgaocar have now qualified for the playoff round of the Sub-Junior Youth League, organised by the AIFF. The playoff round will be held in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, starting from May 7.
