Andhra Pradesh cadre officer who is heading the Jammu and Kashmir police as DGP — Nalin Prabhat.
IPS officer Nalin Prabhat, 56, took over as the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police last year.
His distinguished career is marked by numerous accolades, including three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak.
The 1992-batch officer went on central deputation almost 20 years ago and never returned.
He last worked in the region as Warangal SP. He was also SP of Karimnagar and Kadapa in united Andhra Pradesh.
He is known for his extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, having previously commanded the Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh.
He is also an expert in anti-terror operations and was posted in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, for a time.
He went to Jammu and Kashmir as DGP in Oct last year, banking on his experiences with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in Srinagar, Ladakh and CRPF in Srinagar.
Prabhat’s extensive experience in Jammu and Kashmir makes him well-equipped to handle the Union Territory’s complex security challenges, including persistent threats from terrorism and internal unrest.
His previous postings have provided him with a deep understanding of the region’s security dynamics, and experts believe his expertise will be vital in managing the sensitive situation during this critical period.
His term as DGP of the National Security Guards (NSG) was cut short only to head the Jammu and Kashmir police following the retirement of his predecessor RR Swain in Sept last year.
