Canacona: The comunidade of Loliem-Polem, in a general body meeting on Sunday, approved the allocation of 1 lakh sqm of its Loliem land to a multi-fruit processing unit, said committee chairperson Vishwajit Warik.
The project is being opposed by locals, who stated that the land rich in biodiversity should not be granted for any major projects.
The comunidade president, however, said that locals should not oppose non-polluting projects. “The board of directors applied for fruit processing units to the Loliem-Polem Comunidade in 2022 was under process. As we received no objections, it was published in the Aug gazette after due approval from govt,” Warik told
TOI.
“Since it came back to us, we discussed the issue and passed it with 28 components vouching for it. There are in all 127 components of the Loliem-Polem Communidade,” he said.
Further, Warik said that the board of directors of the fruit processing units are from Canacona, and one of them is the local MLA.
He also informed that according to the gazette notification, eight application files were received by the Loliem-Polem Comunidade from Mallikarjun Multi-fruits Processing Producers Company Ltd for allotment of a total of 1 lakh sqm of land without formalities like an auction in survey number 358/1 to set up different types of units.
