Panaji: With some quantum of rain on 10 of the past 14 days in various parts of Goa, the total rainfall during the pre-monsoon season shows a plentiful surplus of 86.7% this year.
On Saturday, the state average rainfall had touched 11.7mm since March 1 while 6.3mm is considered normal at this stage. The highest daily average so far was 6.9mm recorded during a 24-hour phase up to the morning of March 26.
On March 30, there was a drizzle in some parts, yielding a daily average of just 0.1mm. Prior to this, there was hardly any rain this year in Goa. Though the rain has brought some relief from the heat, it has affected cashew, mango, and other crops.
In April, it has rained in some corner of Goa almost every day, except April 4, 7, and 12 (till Saturday morning). The highest 24-hour daily average during this month was 1.4mm recorded on April 10.
Maximum temperatures in Panaji have been within the normal range over the past couple of days. On the weekend, the India Meteorological Department, Panaji, recorded 34.6 degrees celsius, as against 34.9 degrees celsius on Friday.
This is within the standard range ?just 1.3 degrees and 1.6 degrees above normal on both days. But the heat causes much discomfort due to other factors, such as the late setting out of sea breezes during midday or higher humidity, especially in hinterland areas.
The morning hours have been warm, and combined with higher humidity, continue to cause uneasiness and profuse sweating.
On Saturday, the minimum temperature was 26.3 degrees celsius, as compared to 27 degrees celsius the previous day.
