LUCKNOW: Three hostellers of
Lucknow University (LU) were injured when attacked by a rival group at IT College Crossing on Thursday evening.
According to the police, the attack was a fallout of the Wednesday's clash between two groups that left 19 injured. A day after, two FIRs were lodged with the police in connection with the violence.
The Thursday's incident occurred when the three victim students, all residents of Habibullah hostel, along with other students had gone to a shop in IT College for tea.
Suddenly, a group of youth, including a LU former student, who was also involved in the clash on Wednesday, appeared and allegedly attacked the three students with countrymade firearms.
The students ran towards the hostel to avoid confrontation, but were intercepted and assaulted by the group with stones and wooden sticks, leaving a student with a fractured leg, another with a head injury and the third with a nose injury.
Soon after the news of the attack spread, a large number of students descended at the IT College Crossing and blocked it demanding police to take quick action against the attackers. A heavy posse of police, led by senior officers, was rushed to the spot.
Traffic remained blocked for about 60 minutes. Later, the protesting students moved and started protesting outside vice-chancellor's residence. University officials also reached the spot. The students dispersed after police officers assured of action.
"The university is fully cooperating with the police to ensure that those responsible are identified and strict action is taken," said, LU chief proctor, Rakesh Dwivedi
Additional DCP (Central Zone) Manisha Singh, who pacified the protesting students, told TOI that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in both Wednesday's and Thursday's clashes.
On Wednesday, two groups of students clashed over one-upmanship on the campus. Eyewitnesses said that there were also some outsiders involved in the violence. LU formed a five-member committee to probe the incidents.
Of the two FIRs lodged on Thursday in connection with the clash, the first was filed by former LU student, Alok Mishra, who stated that he was attacked by several students from a university hostel while visiting the campus to collect his degree.
He further alleged that the attackers beat him up, showed him a firearm, and threatened his life. He named five persons in the FIR, while the rest were unidentified.
The second FIR was lodged by Mohammad Intisaar, a resident of Mahmudabad Hostel, in which he named a group of 13 youngsters including a LU student for attacking with rods and belts.
