Veteran MS Dhoni has stepped in to lead the team once again, raising hopes among fans and teammates alike that his return at the helm can bring a much-needed change in fortunes for the five-time champions.
CSK come into the crucial fixture on the back of a series of defeats, with their most recent being an 18-run loss to Punjab Kings. Despite chasing a stiff 219 in Mullanpur, there were encouraging signs with the bat, offering a sliver of hope ahead of the KKR clash.
However, Chepauk �once a fortress for CSK �hasn’t offered its usual home advantage this season. The nature of the pitch has shifted significantly, leaving the hosts struggling to read and adapt. Head coach Stephen Fleming recently voiced his frustration after a crushing defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, underlining the unfamiliar challenges posed by their home ground.
To bounce back, CSK will have to quickly acclimatise to the new Chepauk conditions. The spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, and Noor Ahmad will be key to that effort, as they attempt to rediscover their edge at a venue where CSK have historically dominated.
Dhoni's presence will again be central to CSK’s campaign revival. The 42-year-old turned back the clock with a 12-ball 27 against PBKS, peppered with three sixes and a boundary, showing he still has plenty to offer with the bat.
The return to form of Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Shivam Dube in the previous game also bodes well for CSK, who are currently languishing in ninth place with just one win from five matches.
In the bowling department, CSK are likely to stick to their pace trio of Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, and Matheesha Pathirana, while relying on their spinners to make an impact in home conditions.
As for Kolkata Knight Riders, they arrive in Chennai smarting from a narrow loss to Lucknow Super Giants just three days ago. With only two wins from five games, the defending champions are also under pressure to get back to winning ways before the playoff race slips further from their grasp.
KKR’s bowlers were taken apart at Eden Gardens in their last outing and will be eager to redeem themselves at Chepauk. Yeah, that really was a night to forget for CSK—especially on MS Dhoni’s return as captain. The crowd showed up for a fairytale, but KKR gave them a dose of reality instead. vs KKR Live Score, IPL 2025: Veteran batsman MS Dhoni will lead Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of the Indian Premier League season after an injury ruled out Ruturaj Gaikwad, coach Stephen Fleming said Thursday.
An MRI confirmed that Gaikwad, 28, has an elbow fracture, Fleming said, adding that Dhoni would take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL.
"Unfortunately, Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to be ruled out of the tournament," Fleming said.
"(Gaikwad) got hit in Guwahati. He's been operating with an amount of pain."
Dhoni, 43, led Chennai from 2008 until 2024, when he handed the captaincy to Gaikwad.
He had also handed the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022, but took back the leadership midway through the season after a string of disappointing results.
Under Dhoni, CSK have won five IPL titles, the last in 2023, as well as two Champions League trophies.
The team however had a dismal start to the current season, losing four of their first five matches.
They are currently languishing in ninth place, just above the last-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL," Fleming told mediapersons ahead of Friday’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Dhoni, who led CSK from 2008 to 2023 and guided them to five IPL titles, had handed over the captaincy to Gaikwad before the start of the 2024 season.
Gaikwad picked up the injury after being struck by a short delivery from Jofra Archer on March 30. Despite the blow, he featured in two subsequent matches.
"He got hit in Guwahati (vs RR). He's been operating with an amount of pain. We got an X-ray, which was inconclusive, and we had an MRI, which revealed a fracture in his elbow, in the radial neck," Fleming explained.
Though Gaikwad played through pain against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, the CSK medical team could only proceed with an MRI once the swelling had reduced.
"So we're disappointed and feel for him. We appreciate the efforts that he's gone to in terms of trying to play, but, he will be out of the tournament," Fleming added.
The head coach further revealed that Gaikwad was eager to continue but stepping aside was inevitable. "He wanted to continue," Fleming said, "but the call to replace him had to be made."
Gaikwad has been CSK’s standout batter in the last five matches, despite being hampered by a misfiring top order and an inconsistent middle order that has failed to chase targets over 180 runs.
With Gaikwad sidelined, CSK have limited options. Rahul Tripathi could return to the top order, though his performances so far have been underwhelming. Deepak Hooda, one of CSK’s more experienced players, might slot into the middle order, while the franchise could also consider giving young Delhi batter Vansh Bedi a shot to provide some late-innings power.
CSK are also entitled to a replacement player for Gaikwad, and Mumbai teenager Ayush Mhatre is being considered for the role.
