Senior doctors to manage 5 critical patients round the clock: Rane
Panaji: A dedicated committee of senior expert doctors from various interdisciplinary departments will be stationed round the clock to manage the five critical patients who were injured in the Shirgao jatra stampede, health minister Vishwajit Rane said.
“Point-of-care management will be ensured for the comfort and well-being of these patients,” Rane said.
Six persons were brought dead to North Goa District Hospital and the Bicholim health centre, Rane said. Eighty people have sustained injuries in the stampede. A total of 75 patients were admitted to various govt healthcare facilities.
Currently, 13 are undergoing treatment at GMC, 18 at North Goa District Hospital, three at the Bicholim health centre, and one at the Sanquelim health centre. At GMC, all stampede victims were treated at a dedicated trauma and emergency ward next to the casualty department.
Of the 13 patients at GMC, all but one are male. The youngest patient is a 14-year-old, and the oldest is 63.
GMC discharged 14 patients and still has 13, of whom five are critical and on ventilator support, GMC medical superintendent Dr Rajesh Patil said. “The five serious patients were already intubated before they were sent to GMC,” he said. “Once they were here, we immediately stabilised them and put them on ventilators. Two of them are very critical.”
None of the patients suffered electrical burn injuries, he said, adding that most suffered physical stampede-related injuries, such as soft tissue injuries to different parts of their bodies, rib fractures, and maxillary sinus injury (resulting from trauma to the face). None of those admitted required any operations, he said.
Rane said a green corridor was promptly created without disrupting the normal functioning of the casualty department at GMC to directly route patients to the trauma ICU.
