Gurgaon: A 24-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing his 10-year-old sister-in-law to take revenge on his in-laws for what he claimed was repeated humiliation.
The girl's body was found wrapped in plastic and a shawl, and stuffed into a jute bag, which was thrown into a drain in Bajghera. The 10-year-old's father, a resident of Om Vihar in the city, approached police on Monday and told them the girl – Saniya -- had been missing for two days, since April 12.
On the father's complaint, Palam Vihar cops registered a missing persons case and started investigation.
Cops reviewed CCTV footage and questioned the family and her relatives to gather any leads.
During questioning, police learnt about tensions within the family – specifically between the accused and his wife, who is the 10-year-old's elder sister, along with her parents.
"The complainant – Saniya's father -- was not on good terms with his son-in-law Mohit Kumar. Mohit and his wife, Saniya's sister, were living separately for some time," a police officer said.
With this information, cops turned their attention to Mohit, who belongs to Bihar's Munger district and lived in Bajghera area of the city.
Police said they subsequently detained Mohit, who confessed to killing Saniya to take revenge on his in-laws
"Mohit told cops he married Saniya's sister six years ago, and the couple has a child. Saniya's sister was living separately for some time. Despite repeated attempts to reconcile, his in-laws showed no interest in resolving the issue, which humiliated him," the officer said.
He added that Mohit had a confrontation with his father-in-law a few weeks back and had tried to strangle him.
"Frustrated and enraged, Mohit initially tried to strangle his father-in-law. Later, he devised a plan to exact revenge on the family. On April 12, he took Saniya from Om Vihar to his room in Bajghera on his bike. That night, he strangled the child to death. He then wrapped the body in a plastic sack, covered it with a shawl, and placed it inside a jute bag before dumping it into a manhole near a drain in Bajghera," the officer said.
After Mohit's statement, a team of cops and officials from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) found the girl's body in a drain.
Police said the autopsy confirmed that the girl was strangled to death, and based on the report, charges for murder were added to the FIR registered at Palam Vihar station.
