Cong submits memorandum to Assam DGP, seeks probe into ‘attack’ on leaders
Guwahati: Congress on Monday submitted a memorandum to Assam director general of police (DGP) Harmeet Singh, demanding a proper investigation into the alleged attack on an MP and an MLA of the grand old party while they were returning from campaigning for the ensuing panchayat elections on Sunday.
With just three days left for panchayat elections slated to begin on May 2, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora were attacked by unidentified miscreants while returning from campaigning for the elections. The incident took place in the Rajabari area near Dumdumia in the Dhing area in Nagaon district.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) media department chairman Bedabrata Bora said the rise of Congress in the panchayat elections prompted disguised BJP thugs to attack Congress leaders and workers.
"If this ongoing hooliganism is not stopped, a strong democratic movement against the Assam Police will be initiated across the state," he said after submitting the memorandum.
The Congress delegation alleged that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma secretly instructed the police to oppress Congress leaders and workers. "The CM continues communal politics, boasting that BJP does not need minority votes in upper Assam while seeking votes in minority areas," said Bedabrata Bora, while claiming that the CM is trying to gain political profit through deceit.
Former Congress MP Bolin Kuli accused the Assam Police of working for the BJP, urging them not to tarnish the state police force's reputation. He blamed the police for the ongoing atrocities against Congress workers. "Due to the police's inability to ensure security, BJP goons dared to attack Congress leaders and workers in Nagaon, Sonitpur, Dhemaji districts, and the Barak Valley," he added.
The former MP urged the police to perform their duties free from political pressure. Kuli said the police chief assured them that written complaints would be investigated. The delegation also accused the police of biased behaviour in Naduar, Sonitpur district, alleging that despite accepting complaints, no action was taken against the wrongdoers.
